The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The fan-friendly ballpark offers an intimate atmosphere with seats for a little over 4,000 fans. This is a great stadium for kids as it offers a playground and rock climbing wall. Bumper boats and a waterfall offer lots of fun for little ones. There are concessions available. This park is located approximately eight miles east of La Plata. It offers a scenic wooded parkland area with nature and hiking trails, several playgrounds, fishing piers and picnic areas. The 60-acre fresh water lake offers pedal boating, row boating, fishing, kayaking and canoeing. The lake has plenty of bluegill, bass, catfish and trout. A boat ramp is available. Fishing supplies, concessions and boat rentals are also offered.
Mount Aventine Manor House
The Mount Aventine manor house is one of the areas most important antebellum houses in the United States. This commanding 1840 Potomac River plantation is situated on a high terrace and affords a gorgeous view of the Potomac River and nearby farm fields. The view of the Virginia shoreline is indisputably one of the most beautiful vistas in the area. Mount Aventine’s location led to its being used as a signal point for Federal troops during the Civil War period.
Purse State Park is located on the Potomac River. The area is part of the Aquia Formation which formed nearly 60 million years ago when a massive meteor hit the earth. Warm, shallow water once covered the area. This made it the perfect habitat for mackerel sharks, sand tiger sharks, eagle rays and snails. Today, the area is used for fossil hunting, fishing and bird watching. Fossil Hunting is a popular activity at Purse. Fossilized bones, shell fragments and shark’s teeth can be found in the park, along the sand and rocks. The best time to find these fossils are during low tide. The park offers several unmarked bird-watching trails that meander through a forested area and along the edge of a small wetland. Wades Bay is a great fishing location for white perch, carp, large mouth bass and many other fish species.
